Beside the First Bathing Beach on Laiyang Road, Qingdao Underwater World leads you through a glowing Jellyfish Palace, past playful seals and penguins, into a fully transparent undersea tunnel where sharks and rays glide overhead — and on to the Ocean Theater’s mermaid and “Dancing with Sharks” shows. Plan the perfect visit: tickets, the one-way route, show times and honest traveler tips.

The ocean, indoors
On the rocky shore between Lu Xun Park and the First Bathing Beach, Qingdao Underwater World carries on a tradition that began in 1932 with the Qingdao Aquarium — China’s first public aquarium. Today’s complex gathers a Dream Jellyfish Palace, seal and penguin pools, rich marine specimen halls and a fully underground undersea museum whose transparent tunnel puts sharks, rays and shimmering schools of fish all around you.
The visiting route flows one way, from the neon glow of the Jellyfish Palace to the “living fossils” of the Freshwater Life Hall, with the Ocean Theater’s mermaid and diver shows timed through the day. Travelers rate it 4.7/5 across more than 26,000 Trip.com reviews and rank it #1 of 312 things to do in Qingdao on TripAdvisor — a perfect family outing and the city’s best rainy-day plan.

A sperm whale, an ocean sunfish and a giant whale skeleton — the natural-history heart beside the live exhibits.
Plan your visit
Opening hours, the smartest way to time the one-way route and a few aquarium-smart tips make all the difference.
Open daily 8:30 – 17:30. Ticket windows stop selling at 17:00 and final admission is also at 17:00 — arrive by early afternoon to enjoy the full 3–5 hour route without rushing the shows.
Metro Line 3 to People’s Hall or Huiquan Square, then a 10-minute shorefront walk to No. 2, Laiyang Road — or hop off any bus at Lu Xun Park. Roughly 15 minutes by taxi from Qingdao railway station.
The route is strictly one-way — you enter on the south side of Laiyang Road and exit on the north, with no doubling back. Check the Ocean Theater show board on arrival, and come early on weekends to beat the crowds.

Qingdao Underwater World is a captivating aquatic adventure that offers a unique glimpse into the ocean’s wonders. From the moment you enter, you’re greeted with stunning displays of marine life, including colorful fish, graceful rays, and even playful sea lions. The highlight is the impressive underwater tunnel, where…
We went with the whole family and another family’s friends and love the place — it’s amazing! We enjoyed a lot! Love the view outside as well!
A wonderful place — the whole family loved it. The Oceanarium has many rooms, plus a seagull-feeding cruise. Great price, we highly recommend it.
This place has really improved. It’s easy to navigate inside, with signs pointing the way, even in English. I recommend it.
A great spot for families — I even received a special discount for people born in the Year of the Horse. My only gripe was how crowded it got with tour groups at times. (Review translated from Thai.)
“Sea Vow & Mountain Oath” (Hai Shi Shan Meng) truly lives up to its name as the anchor exhibit of the Underwater World! It sits right across from the show pool — we arrived before the performance started and photographed it non-stop, and plenty of couples were taking their couple photos here too. Whether you look…
