Plan the perfect visit: tickets, the one-way route, show times and honest traveler tips.

The ocean, indoors
On the rocky shore between Lu Xun Park and the First Bathing Beach, Qingdao Underwater World carries on a tradition that began in 1932 with the Qingdao Aquarium — China’s first public aquarium. Today’s complex gathers a Dream Jellyfish Palace, seal and penguin pools, rich marine specimen halls and a fully underground undersea museum whose transparent tunnel puts sharks, rays and shimmering schools of fish all around you.
The visiting route flows one way, from the neon glow of the Jellyfish Palace to the “living fossils” of the Freshwater Life Hall, with the Ocean Theater’s mermaid and diver shows timed through the day. Travelers rate it 4.7/5 across more than 26,000 Trip.com reviews and rank it #1 of 312 things to do in Qingdao on TripAdvisor — a perfect family outing and the city’s best rainy-day plan.

Online rates for international travelers start from US$24.90 — roughly 38% off the US$40.80 walk-up price — for the combo pass that includes either the pier sightseeing cruise or a complimentary ocean snack. Multi-visit leisure cards and full-day Qingdao city tours that bundle Badaguan, the Beer Museum and Underwater World are also available.
The recommended sightseeing time is 3–5 hours. The visiting route is strictly one-way — Dream Jellyfish Palace, Seal Hall, Marine Life Hall, Whale Hall, the undersea tunnel and finally the Freshwater Life Hall — so pace yourself and save time for the Ocean Theater performances.
The aquarium sits at No. 2, Laiyang Road, Shinan District, right beside the First Bathing Beach and Lu Xun Park. Take Metro Line 3 to People’s Hall (Renmin Huitang) or Huiquan Square station and walk about 10 minutes along the shore, or ride any of the many buses that stop at Lu Xun Park. From Qingdao station it is roughly 15 minutes by taxi.
Enter from the south side of Laiyang Road and follow the one-way flow: Jellyfish Palace → Seal Hall → Marine Life Hall → Whale Hall → the fully underground Underwater World with its transparent tunnel → Freshwater Life Hall. You exit on the north side of Laiyang Road — you cannot double back, so enjoy each hall as you reach it.
Do not miss the “Dancing with Sharks” diver show and the dreamy mermaid performance at the Ocean Theater, the thousands of jellyfish in the Dream Jellyfish Palace, the sharks and rays passing overhead in the transparent tunnel, and rare “living fossils” such as the Chinese sturgeon and giant salamander in the Freshwater Life Hall. Show times are posted on the board at the theater — plan your loop around them.
